我常常在想：為什麼即使相信的事情與事實有所出入，我們依然可以執迷不悟呢？

一位曾經堅信創造論、反對演化論的人葛蘭模頓(Glenn Morton) 描述了自己過去如何忽視演化論的證據。他用「惡魔」的譬喻寫道："Morton’s demon was a demon who sat at the gate of my sensory input apparatus and if and when he saw supportive evidence coming in, he opened the gate. But if he saw contradictory data coming in, he closed the gate. In this way, the demon allowed me to believe that I was right and to avoid any nasty contradictory data."

粗略地翻譯如下：「我的認知空間前面坐了一個管制進出的惡魔，他對與我看法一致的證據敞開大門，卻把與我信念相衝突的證據拒於門外。如此一來，惡魔使我相信自己是對的，免於任何討人厭的資訊不一致。」

「模頓的惡魔」(Morton's demon) 生動地反映了心理學的一個現象：確認偏誤 (confirmation bias) ，有時亦作「我方偏見」(myside bias)。確認偏誤一般泛指「尋找、解讀和記住對自己信念有利的資訊，並漠視否定信念的相關資訊」的思考傾向。用白話文來說，大概就像是「信者恆信、不信者恆不信」「只看見想看見的、只聽見想聽見的」「試圖忽略不想面對或不願相信的事情」。
